The city of Centerville, South Dakota (driving directions) will be celebrating its 125th anniversary (1883 - 2008) during the long Fourth of July holiday weekend, Thursday, July 3rd through Sunday, July 6th, 2008. The Centerville 125 Anniversary planning committee has been at work for nearly a year hashing out ideas and setting plans in motion for the biggest event since the Centennial Celebration, held in 1983.
Many events are planned for the celebration, including the annual Firemen's Street Dance, a revival of the old Toilet Bowl Races, a Fun Day on July 4th, an All-Class Reunion at the Centerville high school and a Celebration Parade. The planners are inviting all area communities and their organizations to participate with an entry in the Centerville Parade. A variety of entries are welcomed, from floats to family entries, bands, 4-wheelers, horse clubs, antique cars and equipment to politicians and military displays. Celebration Cleanup
On Thursday, June 19, 2008, clean up of the main street business district began at 9am. Business members and volunteers swept the sidewalks, pulled weeds and picked up garbage for the upcoming Centerville 125th Anniversary Celebration. The 125th Celebration flower committee has also placed planters and hanging petunia bags on fences around town.
Here are a few pictures from the cleanup effort.
